Abstract

Starting from 1966 and until the death of the Yugoslav communist leader Josip Broz Tito, periodic meetings took place between him and Nicolae Ceaușescu, one of which took place in Timisoara between 23rd - 24th of November, 1971. The visit was meticulously prepared by the Romanian authorities, with the usual security and protocol measures taken for such occasions, but there were also exaggerated festive moments, such as the large number of people who were forced to express their "enthusiasm" towards the two delegations. During the two rounds of discussions, the internal developments in the two states were presented (with the Yugoslav side showcasing the changes in the country's constitution through which the republics enjoyed increased autonomy), as well as the main international problems. Thus, the conflicts between India and Pakistan, those in the Middle East, the Vietnam War, the preparation of the European security conference, the USSR's tendencies to control socialist states, but also the international communist movement were analyzed, the positions of the two states being identical or close on these issues. The program also included visiting some of the significant enterprises for Timisoara’s industry, the meeting in Timisoara highlighting the good relations that existed at that time between Romania and Yugoslavia, as well as the high level of trust that was established between the two party and state leaders.
